How to Know When to Say No...

So as your business grows, you'll no doubt have a lot of opportunities thrown your way. So how do you know when to say YES and when to say NO?

Here's how. Set short and long term goals. Have a very clear vision of where your business is going. It's one of the easiest things to do, but often times we don't have a goal set for the year, or, heck - even the month. For you know how much money you want to make this month? Do you know how many networking events you're going to attend? Do you know how many speaking opportunities you're going to claim this year?

Here's why it's so important to set goals at the beginning of each year and re-evaluate them each month. If Susie Q asks you to speak on a panel at an event this week - you'll know whether or not you should. For instance, if my goal is to fill a workshop next month and my target audience will be at Susie's event, then I will probably say yes. Especially if I know that I'll have 5-10 minutes to pitch my services or products to the crowd. I want to leverage Susie's audience, so I'm going to make the most of it.

When should I say no? When it's not in line with my vision. If Billy B. asks me to co-host his webinar on graphic design basics, I'm going to decline because that's not a topic I am well versed in, and I don’t want to make the mistake of business owners coming to me to try to learn about graphic design when that’s now what I specialize in. I wouldn’t be doing them a service, and it’s not part of my vision for my company to branch out into graphic design assistance.

Does it align with my mission?

Is it furthering my vision?

Those are the questions you need to ask yourself before accepting a speaking engagement, attending a conference, purchasing an e-book, or even making your to-do list for the week.

By asking yourself those questions you make it easier on yourself and you give yourself permission to say no without the guilt. You have a vision, right? Do things that align with that vision.
