How to Make Time for Voice Acting

Time Management Strategies for Aspiring Voice Actors

Voice acting is an art form that demands dedication, practice, and continuous learning. Whether you aspire to be the next animation superstar, the voice behind your favorite video game characters, or the narrator of an audiobook, mastering the craft requires time and effort. However, for many aspiring voice actors, finding the time to practice and learn can be a daunting challenge amidst the demands of everyday life. In this article, I want to share some effective time management strategies that can help a new voice actor like you carve out the time you need to hone your skills and delve deeper into the art and business of voice acting.

Understanding the Importance of Time Management

Before diving into specific strategies, it's essential to understand why effective time management is crucial for aspiring voice actors. Time is a finite resource, and how you choose to allocate it can significantly impact your progress and success in the industry. Here are several reasons why mastering time management is vital:

1. Consistency Breeds Skill: Like any skill, voice acting improves with consistent practice. By managing your time effectively, you can ensure regular practice sessions that reinforce and enhance your abilities.

2. Continuous Learning: The world of voice acting is vast and ever-evolving. From mastering new accents and dialects to staying updated on industry trends, dedicating time to learning is essential for growth and staying competitive.

3. Building Your Brand: Voice acting isn't just about talent; it's also about building your brand and marketing yourself effectively. Allocating time to understand the business side of voice acting, such as networking, auditioning, and self-promotion, is essential for long-term success.

Time Management Strategies for Aspiring Voice Actors

Now before we get into some tips to help you carve out time. I think it’s important for you to actually see how much time you’re spending on things that might not be that important right now. If you’re really serious about wanting to get started as a voice actor, I want you to do yourself a favor: spend one full day tracking what you spend your time on. Now if that feels like to much of a stretch, then try this as an alternative. Pick out something specific you do - like maybe scrolling on social media. Then, assess how much time you’ve spent scrolling.

Here’s why: sometimes we get stuck in patterns and we don’t even realize what in the world we’ve been doing and then it’s already 3:00 in the afternoon and you’re wondering where the day went! I have a weekly tracker on my cell phone that tells me how much time I’ve spent on social media each week. The tracker also tells me if my time has increased or decreased so I know whether I need to adjust or not. If you’re a Galaxy user, you’ll find this under Settings > Digital Wellbeing.

So before you work on strategies, take the time to assess where you actually are today. Then you can think about starting to create a plan of action based on the following tips:

1. Set Clear Goals:

Before you can effectively manage your time, you need to know what you're working toward. Set specific, achievable goals for your voice acting career, whether it's mastering a new accent, landing your first professional gig, or expanding your vocal range. Break down these larger goals into smaller, actionable steps that you can tackle on a daily or weekly basis.

2. Create a Schedule:

Treat your voice acting pursuits as you would any other job or commitment. Create a weekly schedule that includes dedicated time blocks for practicing, learning, auditioning, and networking. Be realistic about your available time and commitments outside of voice acting, but also prioritize your goals accordingly.

3. Utilize Time Blocks Effectively:

Divide your practice sessions into focused time blocks, typically ranging from 20 to 60 minutes each. During these sessions, eliminate distractions and fully immerse yourself in your craft. Use techniques like the Pomodoro Technique, which involves working for 25 minutes followed by a 5-minute break, to maintain focus and productivity.

4. Make the Most of Downtime:

As an aspiring voice actor, you'll likely encounter downtime throughout your day, whether it's during your commute, household chores, or waiting in line. Use this time productively by listening to podcasts or audiobooks related to voice acting, practicing vocal exercises silently, or analyzing the performances of professional voice actors.

5. Prioritize Learning:

Voice acting is a multifaceted discipline that encompasses various skills, from voice control to script analysis. Allocate time each week for learning activities, such as taking online courses, attending workshops or webinars, reading books on voice acting and performance techniques, and practicing vocal exercises. Continuously seek out opportunities to expand your knowledge and skill set.

6. Stay Organized:

Keep track of your goals, progress, and commitments using tools like calendars, to-do lists, and productivity apps. Set reminders for important deadlines, auditions, and networking events to ensure that nothing falls through the cracks. Establishing a system for staying organized can help you manage your time more effectively and reduce stress.

7. Embrace Flexibility:

While having a schedule is essential, it's also important to be flexible and adaptable. Recognize that unexpected events or opportunities may arise that require you to adjust your plans. Learn to prioritize tasks based on their importance and urgency, and be willing to adapt your schedule as needed without becoming overwhelmed.

8. Seek Support and Accountability:

Surround yourself with a supportive community of fellow voice actors, mentors, and coaches who can provide guidance, feedback, and accountability. Join online forums, social media groups, or local voice acting communities where you can connect with like-minded individuals, share resources, and collaborate on projects. Having a support network can help you stay motivated and on track with your goals.
